What Is Molecular Biology?

What Is Molecular Biology?

ASCB is an inclusive, international community of biologists studying the cell, the fundamental unit of life. The fundamental principles of biology that are acceptable to this day include cell theory, gene theory, evolutionary theory, homeostasis, and energy. Khrapko’s lab is studying mutations in mtDNA and their effects on cellular physiology, aging and disease. Indeed, in some circles, the emphasis on molecular biology and its philosophy of reductionism caused initial tumult for many evolutionary biologists who felt that the autonomy of biology was challenged as it stood to be engulfed by the physical sciences (Mayr, 1982; Wilson, 1996).

In your first year, you’ll be in timetabled teaching activities such as lectures, seminars, practical classes and workshops, guided independent study sessions and fieldwork for about 14 hours a week. Kevin Dunbar and his students spent many hours meticulously interviewing real biologists from top laboratories, recording their lab meetings, and reading grant applications and manuscripts of research papers. On this module you’ll attend lectures, practical classes and workshops, and supervised time in a studio or workshops and you’ll take part in fieldwork study and guided independent study.

You’ll get comprehensive training of practical skills in microbiology including sound technique and lab practices for the safe handling of category 2 microorganisms. Areas of excellence in our Department include biotechnology, developmental and integrative biology, ecology and evolutionary biology, genomics, microbiology, toxicology and science pedagogy. Graduate students may earn a master of science in biology.

These fields include: immunology (the study of the immune system and how it works to protect us from harmful organisms and harmful substances produced by them); pathogenic microbiology (the study of disease-causing microorganisms and the disease process (epidemiology and etiology)); microbial genetics (which is linked to molecular biology); food microbiology (studying the effects of food spoilage); and so on 2.

Interviews are not designed to test factual knowledge, instead, they show an applicant’s ability to think and to understand the biological knowledge they have accrued up to that time. He called these units “cells.” In 1676, Anton von Leeuwenhoek published the first drawings of living single celled organisms. Biological sciences are the foundation of contemporary agriculture. However, the most significant development in biological knowledge came when humans transitioned from hunters and foragers to farmers, cultivating crops and perfecting agriculture.

Options include: anatomy, biophysics, cell and molecular biology, computational biology, ecology and evolution, environmental biology, forensic biology, genetics, marine biology, microbiology, molecular biosciences, natural science, neurobiology, physiology, zoology and many others. A central organizing concept in biology is that life changes and develops through evolution and that all lifeforms known have a common origin.

A course in biological sciences will combine practical and theory work with a mixture of lectures, seminars and lab work. Our Biology program is versatile, allowing you to complement your Genetics, Cell Biology, Physiology, Ecology, Plant Biology, and Human Anatomy courses with studies from the arts, humanities, languages, and mathematics areas. The Department, like the discipline, is diverse, offering both undergraduate and graduate students opportunities to study living systems at the level of genes and proteins to entire ecosystems.
